A new ruling says countries – including NZ – must take action on climate change under the law of the sea

One more treaty that needs to go on the big pile of other papers to be reduced to ashes when the big cleanout happens. International law including all its treaties were supposed to foster cooperation between independent nations but politicians of all stripes have been happy to sign over tasks that clearly belong to the sovereignty of the single nations to those bodies. Not all countries go by those rules. Countries like China and Russia don’t even bother paying lip service and with them a whole roster of others. How can that work? Some shoot themselves in the foot while others free-ride. The more I think it over, the more I think the UN should be dissolved.

Any decision to authorise offshore drilling and other activities contributing to climate change will now need to be assessed under the law of the sea in addition to international climate agreements.
