After All the Media Hype, Wildfires Across Southern Europe Were Completely Normal in 2023

Subtropical zones are not known for deep black Earth and thick forests. The belt is rather dry, sometimes down to desert conditions. That’s why even the ancient Greeks got their grain more from the North of the Black Sea (Ukraine today) and much less from other areas. Only river valleys could ensure this kind of soil and they usually carry a salt problem as Mesopotamia knows all too well. So, if the brush got too thick and it was very dry, fires were part of the feature list. This was only a problem when humans got in the way as they did not like their hard-built houses to be ravaged by those fires. When a hill burns, that’s nature. When hotel complexes are in the way, that’s a disaster. But it’s still the same thing.
