Austria election brings into focus Russian gas habit and a sputtering economy

Austria is not a bellwether. Politicians here prefer to put any thorny issue onto the preferred piece of furniture – the long bench. That’s an expression in the country saying as much as kicking the can down the road. Never say anything that could be seen as tackling a real issue, make all the right noises. That’s also true for the corporate world here. Energy company bosses prefer to sit tight, play woke, and kiss up to notions of greenery while hoping that Russian gas might make a comeback. If the price is Russia invading some more countries then be it. They won’t say so in the open though. The election isn’t going to change that.
