This is the stuff good thrillers are made of. A cabal of scientists deciding that the public cannot be trusted with the truth and that decides to fake data in order to push their agenda. Add plenty of personal ambitions, spineless politicians, and a ton of cash and this is going to be one of the most egregious criminal cases of future history books.
