Referendums are no magic wand to resolve issues. They do produce strange results sometimes and also big surprises. But what’s overlooked is that the vast majority of them are nothing but a rubber stamp tool by those in power to et what they want. It does not represent public will at all as those few that can be bothered to put their vote in often don’t understand the issue well ad emotions are running high. Referendums tend to work on a small level – in counties and municipalities where people tend to know those who govern them personally. I have no good solution for this.
