When a developed country built its power system, it originally did so with a thought about flexibility in the system in mind. If you tailor a system to closely along what average market requirements dictate, you will often find yourself overstretched and fail. Flexibility means overcapacity and it has a price. This overcapacity has been frittered away over more than a decade by wind and solar. Those unreliables are capacity hogs and their increasing use has made our systems brittle.
