BYD’s Electric Bus Woes Threaten to Tarnish the Broader Industry
Buses have a very uneventful life. From the moment they are purchased they know between which two points they will circle back and forth. Their drivers know every mile they make better than you know the inside of your back pocket. So buses are built on spec, especially electric buses. Their batteries are just a sliver bigger than they absolutely need to be. But batteries degrade with time and while you will be able to use your private vehicle even when 20 % of the battery capacity is gone, a bus becomes simply impossible to operate. It cannot perform its circuit anymore. Electric buses are a real stupid idea for many reasons. And an expensive one at that.
The parade of good news for the electric bus industry came to an abrupt halt Sunday with startling revelations from the Los Angeles Times.
