One reason why we have the impression that there are more calamities today is our instant news culture blows everything out of proportion and also that we get live feed from almost any part of the globe. Just 20 years ago, plenty of stuff simply went unnoticed. The data was still there but we often did not get much in terms of pictures. So, the real data people know that things are much better today as they see reality. The rest of humanity is stuck on pictures and those come in much thicker today.
