China Is Gaining Long-Coveted Role in Arctic

China might well come to regret engaging with the Arctic. They seem to assume that it’s all thawing up there but fundamentals just don’t support that thesis anymore. Do you remember Gore claiming that there would be no more ice in the Arctic in 2020? That was more than 3 years ago and very large ships get stuck all the time in the virtual ice. It’s so mighty that Russia builds new superlarge nuclear-powered icebreakers. All that to keep sea lanes with no ice open. If China looks for energy they should rather try to crack methane hydrates off their own coast. That might be cheaper in time.

I was introduced to and met Rudi in Angola when he started to develop his Sub Saharan Africa network.
