Cortés’s Ships and Net Zero Romanticism

Destroying legacy, paid-off, existing coal power generation capacity does not help wind or solar. Those two still need a lot of balancing power otherwise we look at widespread grid failure and hence brown as well as rolling blackouts. So, once a coal plant is down and there is an urgent need for reliable generation, the fastest option wins which means more Natural Gas generation. This means that green activists and those bringing down the coal plants create a bull market for Natural Gas which they hate as well. There are no two ways about it – we need reliable power – not flicker energy. No amount of wishful thinking will change that.
