When you have thousands of smaller wells instead of some few superstar wells, you try out many new things as the potential impact of the risk for things going south is quite small. If you try funny things with a 100 Million USD borehole and this backfires you are in bad pain. But not so on a 1 million USD hole. That’s why tinkering and innovation are so fast on shale and that’s also why nothing matches shale. The conventional wells will copy-paste quite some methods I assume but they can’t drive the process anymore.
