Europe in Talks to Keep Russia-Ukraine Gas Pipeline Flowing

Even if the pipe keeps flowing, the war is about to achieve such destruction on Russia’s ability to produce, refine, and transport hydrocarbons that the country might soon become an importer of energy. In liquid fuels, that has already happened. Gas is not as hard as liquids but eventually, they will feel the squeeze as well. Besides, the pipes through Ukraine get their gas from depleting fields so gas flow might have gone down even without the war. The best thing for Europe would be to sit down and take a good, hard look at its realistic options – whatever they may turn out to be. Nuclear, shale, clean coal – a combination. I don’t hold my breath for that. Wishful thinking is so much easier.
