European nations walk back their ‘climate ambitions’ as the exorbitant price tag becomes clear
Let’s just say that they now formally walk back on their stated ambitions – a bit. On the ground, Germany has not been shy to buy loads of coal electricity from Poland and nuclear power from France and Belgium among others. They have also not been shy of burning coal as much as they can to cover the shortfalls. This is not cheap at all so why are they doing it? Maybe the deciders start to realize that their political futures may be cut much shorter if they keep messing with the lives of their voters. Germans can take a lot of punishment but they won’t do so forever.
