ExxonMobil misled the public about the climate crisis. Now they’re trying to silence critics
I was the head of business development of a gas trading company. As such it was also my job to look at the very fringy possibilities. Things we did not know, things we had no data about, or only very incomplete data with tons of assumptions in it. We looked at everything, and some of those fringe scenarios were even discussed in management meetings. Not because we knew anything but we wanted to be sure that we covered also the improbable scenarios. You don’t want to be caught by something unlikely and be off guard. Thats what EXXON did. States have tried to sue in court over it and lost. Because it’s a thin soup – but activists will run with it no matter how feeble the story is.
