Fusion power start-ups go small in effort to bring commercial reactors to life
When i was 10 years old, I was an avid reader of the Peer Moosleitner” magazine. It was one of the premier science and technology magazines in the German-speaking parts of the world. Back then I learned that fusion was just around the corner. I held my breath – the solution for our energy problems was at hand. That was 40 years ago. In the meantime, trillions of USD of energy infrastructure was built and already written off. I am way more excited about modular fission power than about fusion. Let’s stay a little closer to earth with what we want to do. There is plenty of further development potential with what we actually can do.
Just as spaceflight companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin have built upon NASA technology, a handful of fusion startups are building on government-funded fusion research, with the goal of firing up the first commercial fusion power plant as early as the 2020s.
