How Western Sanctions Are Strangling Putin’s Arctic Gas Ambitions

Imagine you have told your people for decades that your fortunes will rise because of plentiful resources in the soil and then you find out that much of those resources cannot be brought to market for a price that allows you to make a buck. What do you do? When people find out they will be pissed. At the same time, those hyper-expensive projects give rise to kickback schemes that would make any rubber baron in their heyday blush. You can’t stop those and must hope that the market will tighten so much that one day, it will look like it all makes sense. And then this does not happen. This war and the sanctions are a godsend for the receivers of the kickbacks.
