Industry, enviros contrasting accounts over flaring
Let’s face it – flaring is not OK: Its wasteful and the raw gas is full of contaminants that actually put toxins in the air. The carbon – on the other side – does not bother me at all. But, why waste a resource? One way to deal with this is to expropriate anyone who flares before the burner tip. If you don’t put the gas to good use, you not only lose title to it. You also have an obligation to help those that want to use the gas for – whatever reasonable – to do what they need to do. One of the problems I often see in Africa is that companies that flare gas immediately see the gas as a get rich quick scheme to be squeezed if they are approached for the gas. One second before he flared it with no second thoughts. One second after its as if one wants to buy his lifeblood. This BS must end and UIOLI would do that.
