Japan shows coal’s dilemma: More needed now, less in future
The most important body part of man is the wallet. Japan has gone from nuclear to coal and LNG only and now needs its cheaper baseload back. And that is either nuclear or coal. As nuclear is still limited there, its coal. And coal won’t go away for a long time as Japanese know numbers. They know that cleaner fuels have a price and coal can also be stored far easier than LNG. Same goes for China. Clean energy above anything else is a fad of European countries and the Americas. Asians are way more down to earth.
The dilemma facing thermal coal miners is neatly encapsulated by the current dynamics of Japan, where robust short-term demand contrasts with a diminishing long-term outlook.
