I have a theory about why China builds solar and wind parks. They have built up the most massive production facilities for this kind of gear. And now they produce way more solar panels and wind turbines than they can sell in an already oversubsidized international market. What to do? If production facilities cut back, workers will be laid off. In the current difficult economic and political climate in China, this is akin to suicide. Xi can’t risk this – better printing some more money and build useless solar parks. Gives him some bragging points in front of foreigners as well plus makes people look away from their gargantuan coal consumption.

…each operating for 25 years to save an amount of coal equivalent to the yearly increase of China’s coal use just between 2021 and 2022.

I was introduced to and met Rudi in Angola when he started to develop his Sub Saharan Africa network. At the time he worked for EconGas/OMV and he tried organizing longterm LNG supply for them under the unlikeliest of all circumstances.
