Yes, the gas would have gone to Europe and yes, it would have done quite a bit to lower the price we pay right now but it would not take away the underlying issue. When I started working in the Natural Gas world, I was told that the two most important Russian gas fields Urengoy and Yamburg would deplete by 2022 and 2024 respectively. That was 15 years ago. What if that was still true? What if the Russians knew that they would be running out of gas soon and would have to curb gas sales to Europe anyhow? What if they sensed that this is the last opportunity to blackmail Europe with a gas cutoff?
