Net Zero? Fossil Fuels Are Leaving Us Before We Leave Them

Hydrocarbon fuels will never leave us. We may run out of coal, the one true fossil fuel, some time down the line but hydrocarbons such as oil and gas are constantly being replenished by geological processes deep in the Earth’s mantle. We start to understand the process of serpentinization better and better but one thing seems to be clear. Oil and most of all gas are being produced at astronomical rates every day. What we have exploited so far is the tiny whiff of easy gas. But there is way more in shale, granite deposits, coal seams, and most of all bound in molecular lattices called clathrates. Planet Earth is a hydrocarbon generator.
