Niger, Algeria and Nigeria establish taskforce to develop Trans-Saharan gas pipeline
Today, most people still seem to believe that laying a pipe is ultra cheap, and liquefying the gas and putting it on a tanker is expensive. But pipes do not only carry a price tag. They are also risky assets. Northern Africa is one of my favorite regions of the world but I won’t ever delude myself about the risks. It’s a big place giving many groups with an ax to grind plenty of space to hide and a huge infrastructure piece such as this is an enticing opportunity to hold the world ransom. Add the military cost to protect it to the bill. Oh yes, and then there is transit country trouble. It’s an option, but not a cheap one.
