I grew up in the crazy days of the Cold War. And as an Austrian, I stood between the blocks. We are a neutral country and I personally liked that stance very much but in spite of all the non-aligned feelings, we all knew that when it comes to quality of life, the west was our home. America and the West prevailed in the Cold War because of their openness and the competition of ideas and opinions. The other side had its ministries of truth and censors deciding what the people were allowed to see and whatnot. Do we remember what side won the Cold War? I am not so sure.
