Putin’s Grand Gas Project Makes Sense Now
If normal market conditions would have applied to Soviet gas in the 60ies, most of those fields in the Arctic would never have been developed. But a system that does not know economics also does not know the notion of stranded gas. So, Soviet economics brought the gas to Europe. And also the notion that this was the only possible customer that was willing and able to pay a buck for it. China was a peasant nation at the time. Once the red empire fell, it left all the gas infrastructure behind which now could be used at OPEX only by Russia. But now, transit countries wee where you found only imperial territory before. Today, all those fields must support modern economics. All those pipes the same and transit countries do what transit countries do. Its a different situation – why do we expect the same results?
