Russia Eyes New Gas Route to China, Betting Big on Growing Demand
Oh boy, this old story again. The world would do good to look at the fundamentals of Russian gas. Had the Soviet Union not developed the Siberian fields at great cost and by employing a financing model that can only be described as slave labor, all of this gas would have remained undeveloped. Having a lot of gas in a field is not a road to riches. being able to bring that gas to a market willing to pay for it more than it costs to bring it there is a road to something. Russia’s legacy gas system was built under the Soviets. Whatever the price was, it got wiped clean at the demise of the Soviet empire. Cheap gas – but it was not to last. New projects don’t have that.
