Unmanned shipping might have a big future especially when one assumes that ships don’t frequently take bottlenecks such as the Suez Channel or Panama anymore. When marine traffic goes around the cape of Good Hope, sea lanes can be construed in a way that very little in terms of territorial waters must be touched until arriving at the destination. A minimal harbor crew can be flown to ships once they close in. This would make vessels much more flexible and as no personal charges drop on owners and charterers, they might even use those vessels as floating storage on a very slow ride. We know that from line packing or pressure management in gas.
