Slovakia Warns of Financial Damage If Ukraine Gas Transit Stops

Just like many other countries in Central Europe that have no access to the sea. It comes as a surprise to them to learn that the gas supply through Ukraine was to end even if there was no war at all. The gas transmission system built to serve this region from Russia was built around supply from essentially two supergiant fields – Urengoy and Yamburg. A couple of much smaller ones contribute but it was those two that accounted for the vast majority of legacy gas to Europe. Those fields have produced gas since the Fifties. They are low on gas now and were slated to deplete between 2020 and 2024. Thats why Yamal was developed but Yamal delivers gas through North Stream – or is supposed to. Central Europe should have started developing alternatives 10 years ago.
