Suddenly, ‘The Population Bomb’ Is a Population Bust
The population bomb was always to be a bust. When Ehrlich wrote his book the populations in some developed countries were already close to the peak and we could already anticipate a time when we would shrink again. Wealth makes people less dependent on their children for old age and drives many to small or no offspring. China has driven itself into an extreme form of this through its one-child policy. Once you contract the virus of a shrinking population, there is no way out. W will pay for children in the near future.
