Talks on Export of Azerbaijan Gas to Europe via Ukraine Drag On

Cutesy. As if the volumes of gas coming from Azerbaijan mattered to the bigger European picture. Don’t get me wrong. I am always in favor of new volumes of gas for Europe. But to move the needle in a significant way, we need other solutions than far away, hard-to-transport gas from a country that is on the other side of a deep sea and in an area of general insecurity. Europe needs to go back two steps and think hard about its competitiveness, and energy cost is just one factor in that calculus. If this calculus is gotten wrong, maybe the relatively small volumes coming from a Caucasian country might be enough. Depressed economies don’t need a lot of energy.

Ukraine is in talks about supplying Azeri gas to Europe through its network of pipelines but hasn't yet reached an agreement.
