The Africa hydrogen opportunity: The potential, practical challenges, and possible unlocks

Hydrogen is no energy source. It’s only an energy carrier meaning that energy has to be produced by some means and then used to produce hydrogen. That could be done right at the destination as well. What’s holding those projects back? Right, it’s the cost of production. Every hydrogen project in Europe needs a mountain of subsidies to fly and governments are rapidly running out of cash. What’s more expensive than locally produced hydrogen? Yes, hydrogen that is produced far away as it needs to be stored and transported is a whole bag of worms in its own right. So why Africa? I guess politicians know that there won’t be any hydrogen ever but they can’t break that to their political bases. So they entertain potential projects far away and when eventually those fail, then it’s not the politician’s fault. Until then, the piggy squeals.
