Shale could only have happened in the US the way it did. Because of some particularities that can only be found there. One of the most important is the principle that the owner of a piece of real estate is also the owner of its subsoil. This makes people eager to exploit it. In Europe, people are opposed to every subsoil development as they don’t get anything out of it except the trouble it causes.
