For 4500 million years, the planet had evolved from a ball of lava and rock through iceball Earths that lasted for tens of millions of years at a time through the big oxygen event – which was a mass extinction event worse than the rock that killed the dinosaurs. Only over the last couple of decades, it must have laughed itself to pieces as a particularly pesky species of ants called humans seems to think they can influence the climate. Mother nature is no kind mother – life on this planet has lived through many climatic shifts and they often were quite sudden.
