The scourge of prosocial censorship

In the 1993 movie “Demolition Man” the villain Simon Phoenix said in a memorable moment that one cannot prevent people from being assholes. The leaders of the futuristic society depicted by the movie wanted societal uniformity and harmony. Human Nature was in their way and so it had to be repressed. Censorship or letting an enlightened caste decide what can be said or not is just one step toward such heavenly bliss but this nasty human nature has a habit of always wanting out. A free society will sprout in any direction but societal forces will ensure that bad lines will wither and die. In a guided system, that cannot happen so when the caste is wrong, wrong can permeate and become the norm.

I was introduced to and met Rudi in Angola when he started to develop his Sub Saharan Africa network. At the time he worked for EconGas/OMV and he tried organizing longterm LNG supply for them under the unlikeliest of all circumstances.
