There’s a looming waste crisis from Australia’s solar energy boom
The next looming disaster. They still put a brave face on it and continue to say that recycling will take care of this but recycling usually costs more money than the raw materials gained from it are worth – if it has to be mandated. If the stuff in those panels and batteries would be worth the pain, there would already be companies in the wings waiting for every single one. In Vienna, I see trucks buzz around for collecting restaurant grease they bring to bio-digesters. This trash has value now. I don’t see that on the horizon with solar panels and batteries. But fossil energy projects need to set aside money for their decommissioning – where is the cash for RE decommissioning?
As Australians seek to control rising energy costs and tackle the damaging impacts of climate change, rooftop solar has boomed.
