TotalEnergies’ Mozambique LNG project faces delay beyond 2029

Oh dear, another delay. I have been an independent contractor for 14 years now and this project was already in delay when I was still a manager at a gas trading corporation. LNG projects are no sprinters. They take time to develop. 5 years only from the first concept to FID is rather sprightly. 10 years is not rare. Those projects are big, expensive, and very complex plus they exist at the end of a long and expensive supply chain that must do its work over decades to pull together finances. Not easy at all. Also, world-class gas reserves are not extremely frequent so when you see one, LNG pops up immediately. But just because the gas is there does not mean that there should be an export project. Some gas reserves will not be developed. It’s just a fact of life.
