Turkey to begin oil and gas exploration campaign offshore Somalia in broader African energy strategy

Ballsy, or maybe something else? Erdogan is indeed stretching his fingers towards faraway shores to shore up his fortunes. Turkey is in dire straits and its economy has been at the brink of disaster for way more than a year. Much of that is the result of Erdogan’s economic policies and political legacy. Wanting to rebuild the Ottoman Empire is one thing, doing it without imploding is another. Erdogan might have to put some Turkish warships permanently into Somali waters. A training exercise, or a good way to keep some elements of the forces at arm’s length?

Turkey, seeking to extend its influence in Africa and strengthen energy security, will send the 86 m long research vessel Oruc Reis to explore offshore oil and gas blocks belonging to Somalia next month.

I was introduced to and met Rudi in Angola when he started to develop his Sub Saharan Africa network.
