Unclaimed Arctic Gas Carriers Threaten Russia’s LNG Expansion

Maybe part of the reason for the lack of interest in the carriers is the price point. Ice-class carriers are not exactly on the cheap side and operating inside the Arctic Circle brings its own set of challenges let alone being dependent on Russians for the ice-breaking that has to be done. Those vessels are so expensive to run that Russians reload cargo as soon as warmer waters have been entered and if one knows what that costs you have a good idea of what the vessels cost. LNG from Russia is anything but cheap. But so is the pipeline gas from the new fields. Russia’s days as a gas exporter might be over soon – sanctions or not.
