Using Milankovitch Cycles to create high-resolution astrochronologies
I am still in awe of what Milankovich actually pulled off 100 years ago. He calculated minute changes to the Earth’s tilt and orbit by including the gravitational pulls of Jupiter and the other planets as well as the dance of the Moon – Earth pair. Throw in the wobbling of the Sun and its changes of luminosity and you have a witches brew that fries the mental circuitry of all but the most rigorous humans. Giant tip of the hat to the women of this world – most of the calculations were performed with paper and pen by a crew of wickedly-smart women around Milankovich. The world would be a whole lot worse off without this great Serbian and his calculating ladies.
