Weary of many disasters? UN says worse to come

I am often told that 50 years ago things were much better in my home country as politics was not so corrupt. I always retort that only because reporting on corruption back then was much more spotty does not mean that there was less corruption. It only means that we know less about it. If you look at African crime statistics, South Africa will stand out with very high crime rates. The truth is that there is not necessarily more crime than in other African countries but things get recorded much more reliably there. We don’t have more disasters than in the past, according to reliable statistics it’s actually a bit less. But many more people are in a disaster’s way today, all equipped with smartphones. We never had so much information.

A new United Nations report says disasters are on the rise and are going to get worse. In the late 20th century, the world had some 90 to 100 disasters per year.
