Where Did All That Russian Gas Go?

Russia does not only have a time mismatch problem when it comes to shifting markets for its gas. They also have a distance problem. Pipelines are not free and their western Siberian gas fields are much, much farther from China and other Asian nations than they are from Europe. This means that transports cost alone would make this gas very unattractive for China to buy. Or Russia drops the hint of any profits, and subsidizes its gas exports forever but why do that? This cannot be solved in any satisfactory manner. Either it stops exporting this gas, or it uses it up in Russia proper or it just brings it to Europe.

(Bloomberg) -- Much of Russia’s existing gas export infrastructure points West. Unfortunately for Moscow, most of its gas customers are now to its East and a lot of the infrastructure it needs to supply them…
