Why Boiling Methane in Arctic Seas Should Scare the Crap out of us: New Data Shows the Numbers Are Rising
During the last two warm times (Medieval and Roman) the Arctic was largely ice-free. It was warmer than now as attested by vegetation in Greenland that needs a warmer climate in order to grow at all. Those trees don’t grow there today. Consequence: massive gassing out of methane from the Arctic as much of the trapped gas could escape when it thawed. The planet shrugged it off. The Little Ice Age followed the MWP. Because temperatures on Earth are not determined by gases in the atmosphere but rather the Sun and orbital wobbles.
