Why Growth Can’t Be Green
We must give the term “Circular economy” new life. The “in-out” system currently in place is indeed unsustainable. This means that cities will have to produce, process, recycle most of what it needs inside its boundaries. Shipping apples from Chile to the US is indeed quite crazy. The world will become a lot more regional – not only due to environmental considerations but also because consumer economies want their jobs back and in a time of expensive energy transport will also get dearer. Methane is an excellent basis for such an energy system. Imagine every building having its digester which produces clean energy, liquefies it for storage and fueling and balances out the building. Challenge? You bet – but also a great business opportunity for those with a taste for such a thing.
Warnings about ecological breakdown have become ubiquitous. Over the past few years, major newspapers, including the Guardian and the New York Times, have carried alarming stories on soil depletion, deforestation, and the collapse of fish stocks and insect populations.
